Position Overview

As ARVO’s Senior Manager of Marketing, you will report to the chief marketing and communications officer (CMCO) and work collaboratively with other members of the marketing and communications team. You will apply your marketing expertise as you work across departments within ARVO including meetings, education, journals, the ARVO Foundation, chapter affiliates, membership, and technology, to develop and implement cohesive marketing programs that align with ARVO’s business goals and strategic plan. Specifically, the Senior Manager of Marketing will contribute to marketing activities that drive membership retention and recruitment as well as external promotion of events and meetings, journals, education resources, and other products and services in order to increase participation and revenue streams for the association.

 

Additionally, you will work closely with colleagues who organize meetings where our scientist members share their research, publish journals, build education and mentorship programs, develop education and training and communicate to the public and policymakers about the importance of investing in vision research and in our members.  ARVO’s international membership will offer the opportunity for you to develop marketing that targets a broad and diverse audience.

 

Organization Overview

Conducting research to develop innovative treatments and cures for eye and vision disorders and blindness is what our members do. It is through passion and commitment that our nearly 12,000 researchers and physicians strive to make new discoveries. The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) staff spend every day supporting these innovative researchers and clinicians from around the world so together we can save the prevent, cure, or treat eye and vision related disease and ultimately save the sight of many.

 

Eye and vision research is not always an easy career to pursue. Funding is often a challenge. Access to a diverse group of scientists is vital – to share lessons learned and expertise, for mentoring, and to build collaborations so that discoveries can be turned into treatments and cures for patients. In addition to ARVO’s highly recognized and attended annual meeting, ARVO has online programs, products, and services including three peer-reviewed scientific journals. ARVO’s board of trustees and staff work together to identify strategies that lead to new and enhanced products that bring value to our members and their work.

 

Innovation is key to our members’ work and it is also key to how we manage ARVO. We welcome different perspectives and initiatives. We are constantly looking for new, better ways to support our members and we offer many opportunities for our colleagues with fresh ideas to contribute to these efforts. We believe that new discoveries for treating blindness are around the corner and we believe that ARVO – and in turn, all of us who work here – can play at least a small role in supporting the scientists and doctors who will make those discoveries. 

 

Responsibilities of the Senior Manager of Marketing

  • Work with the chief marketing and communications officer to develop and execute marketing strategies specific to ARVO meetings, journals, membership, educational courses and products and jobs board.
  • Manage ad buy programs for ARVO that encompass an appropriate and strategic mix of print and digital to promote ARVO meetings, products and services to a variety of audiences.
  • Manage relationships with marketing vendors including jobs board, mailing list brokers and others.
  • Develop marketing copy and collateral pieces for print and digital advertising, in alignment with ARVO branding guidelines. Collaborate with designers for creation of ARVO ads.
  • Monitor website usage and develop reports.
  • Partner with the digital designer in the development and production of videos to promote ARVO initiatives.
  • Maintain schedules for ARVO exhibits at internal and external meetings and events. Work closely with the exhibit and advertising sales vendor to track and fulfill sponsorship ads onsite at ARVO meetings and online.
  • Research and maintain lists of external audiences (by industry and by organization/society) for specific ARVO meetings, products, services, and journals. Research and purchase postal and email lists appropriate for promoting ARVO activities. Work with list vendors to develop and execute campaigns.
  • Manage editorial calendar, marketing campaign schedules and tactical marketing plans.

 

Qualifications of the Senior Manager of Marketing

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or promotion or similar.
  • Experience working for or with a nonprofit association.
  • Experience with all facets of marketing (researching the target audience, buying mailing lists, writing copy, gathering and monitoring metrics/analytics, developing/tracking campaign schedules, cross-marketing with other associations, etc.).
  • Experience developing and executing integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Experience running marketing campaigns via email, print, and online ads.
  • Clear and succinct verbal and written communications; excellent editing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong understanding of website content management systems, email campaign platforms (familiarity with Real Magnet is a plus), online networking, social media platforms and related business productivity software such as Microsoft Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and understand each department’s marketing needs.
  • Strong organization, time and project management skills. Experience managing competing priorities and projects within deadlines and on budget.
  • Basic knowledge of print and video production including familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and After Effects) is preferred.
  • Knowledge/experience with exhibit floor processes and fulfillment is preferred.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
